Did you happen to see this amazing segment on 60 Minutes last Sunday? If not, do yourself a favor and take the next 13 and a half minutes to watch it. You will be inspired and uplifted, and if you're anything like me you'll have a catch in your throat moments into the first scene.
I was so touched by this story that I also tracked down the trailer for the German documentary film that first introduced the Kimanguiste Symphony Orchestra to the world. I can't wait to see the whole thing:
"This will be our response to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before."
--Leonard Bernstein

this is amazing! i can't wait to see the documentary.
ReplyDeleteI watched a programme in the UK recently about the DRC and the atrocities that go on there in the name of war are incomprehensible to our 'civilised' Western minds. For the Congolese people, ripped apart by rape and poverty and torture to come together and find joy in music is a testament to good triumphing over evil. An amazing documentary, thanks!
ReplyDeleteYes, we did catch this! I was actually planning to tell you about it, but it slipped my mind! Clearly that wasn't necessary. Extremely inspirational piece. I think I said, "Wow" at least 5 times while watching. Will definitely have to catch the documentary.
